Tundra
The concept of a vast frozen plain as a special ecological realm called tundra was developed by the Russians, although the Finns already called this region tunturi since long time ago. Tundra is a vast treeless zone mostly flat, of around 10 % of Earth´s surface, lying between the ice cap and the timberline of northernmost part of North America and Eurasia and having a permanently frozen subsoil, with very long and severe winters and very short and soft summers. Its indigenous communities are called "Arctic peoples" or "Circumpolar peoples".
