Temperate grasslands, savannas and shrublands
Occupying a 8% of the earth´s terrestrial surface, temperate grasslands configurate large areas of lowlands dominated by grasses with very few trees located in cold climate regions that receive less precipitation on average than savannas. Temperate grasslands is currently considered as the most altered ecosystem on the planet, with only 5.5% protected.According to statistics, about 41% of temperate grasslands have been converted to intensive agriculture, 6% to urbanisation and 7.5% to other uses such as commercial forestry (Shinoda et al., 2011).
